A great walk up Great Hill

Even though I’ve lived in Bolton since 1988, I’ve never ventured up Great Hill.   There is a Wiki article about it here…

On Saturday 11 April 2015 I got up nice and early, packed my rucksack and set off for White Coppice, which is about 12 miles from my house.

Once I walked through the cricket ground, I crossed The Goit and started the easy ascent.

The views East were fabulous…

It was a lovely fresh day, not too hot, not too cold, a ‘Goldilocks’ day…it was great to hear the Skylarks as I meandered along…

Before long, I was at ‘Drinkwaters’

Drinkwaters Farm was so named because of a nearby spring which still flows, rather gently, just below the path from the summit of Great Hill. Not far from the farm ruins is a small, discrete memorial to a local fell runner, Joe Whitter (1939-1991).

Joe, a member of Wigan Phoenix, was one of Lancashire’s true fell running characters well known for his ultra-distance runs over these moors. The spring at Drinkwaters was used regularly by Joe and his companions on Sunday morning runs. The February 1992 Fellrunner magazine contained an obituary where it was observed

“Joe Whitter was one of those essential characters that make fell running what it is. The Anglezarke Moors will be a poorer place without him and he will be sadly missed. Typically, Joe requested his ashes be scattered on the moors he loved, and there are many fell runners who will now be unable to run past Drinkwaters on Great Hill without remembering him.”

Why “Joe’s Cup”?…if you carefully remove a stone or two, all will be revealed!

The path to Great Hill and the summit were easily visible from here…

And before long I was on the top!

The views all around were fantastic!  There was a bit of wind chill which made the temperature drop a bit…but the walk was very enjoyable all the same.

One of my photographs taken on this trip was used as a backdrop for the Granada Weather Reports on Monday 13 April 2015.

Fame at last eh?

All in all, a great little walk up Great Hill

Personal Goals 2014

These are my goals for 2014:

Lose 50lbs.
Be in the best physical shape I can be.
Here I am circa 1991, not sure if I can get quite into this shape but I’m going to try my very best!

20131224-170700.jpg

Photograph a minimum of 12 personally satisfying landscape images.
I’ve decided I’m not going to have any ‘clients’ – I’ll take photographs just to satisfy me, then pop them onto a web site, if they sell, they sell. If they don’t, then no loss. No more weddings and portraits. Too much pressure!

20131224-172012.jpg

Turnover £1200 on Landscape image sales.
I’ll set up a Clikpic site or similar and see if any of my images sell! Simple!

Ascend 24 Birketts.
A Birkett is a fell over 300 metres in height in the English Lake District. Named after Bill Birkett who catalogued them. Here’s the chap himself who I photographed at Friars Crag, Derwentwater.

20131224-171315.jpg

Read 12 books.
I love to read, both fact and fiction. I’m currently reading this…it’s heavy going 🙂

Received an email request recently from a young guy who wants to break into the modelling industry.

He asked if I could assist him put together some images for his portfolio.

I took him to the studio I use and we did a few shots.

He explained to me he’d been training at a gym for 3 months, and seeing his physique it was evident he was committed!

I decided to take him to a gym I occasionally train in – Old School!

Can the Lee Big Stopper be used with the Cokin Z Pro filter holder?

PFD:

ME:
Hi,

I already have the Cokin Z pro system hence my question. So are you
confident that the Big Stopper will work with no ‘light leakage’ if I use the Cokin Z Pro Adaptor

PFD:
The Big Stopper has a foam light seal 5mm in from the edge all round, this will be the answer or the problem

God help us…

Skye trip April 2013

I’ve been looking forward to this trip for months! I picked up my friends and we set off for Skye from Manchester at 0800 hrs. on Friday 26 April. As usual, we stopped off at Inveruglas then later at the Commando Memorial just north of Spean Bridge.

20111007-180206.jpg

We arrived at Roskhill Barn around about 1710 hrs. We had a lovely meal of homemade Spaghetti Bolognese and a couple of bottles of beer before we hit the sack, extremely tired after a long days drive.

We woke up on the Saturday, bright and breezy, full of anticipation of what the day would bring. I had already planned some walks in the previous weeks. Today’s was going to be Coire na Creiche and the Fairy Pools circuit. I had selected this walk from the Walk Highlands website. This website is a fantastic resource for anyone planning to do some walks on their Scottish holiday!

The actual walk details are available here.

We arrived at the car park and got into our walking gear by about 1000 hrs. The scenery from the car park itself is stunning, with Sgurr an Fheadain which sits in Coire na Crieche, in the central Cuillin on view.

It’s a short, enjoyable, not too strenuous walk to some rather stunning waterfalls.

To give you a sense of scale my friend David is standing at the top of the waterfall…

Dave PirieHe looks fairly insignificant, yet he’s about 6′ 4″ tall!

There are some great views over to Sgurr Thuilm from here too!

After we’d taken our photographs and had a lunch break, we went to visit the Talisker distillery.

And here is ‘Team Skye’…

Sunday was a bit of a washout, with squally showers all day. We did manage to visit Duntulm Castle though…

This time next week…

I’m off to Skye next week, and I cannot wait.  By about this time I’m hoping I’m not too far from the commando memorial at Spean bridge…      I always stop here when on the way through the Highlands… 20111007-180206.jpg
